Chicken Kofta Curry- A Traditional Mughlai Chicken Kofta Recipe

Chicken kofta curry, also known as chicken meatball curry is a very famous and delicious dish made with minced chicken, ginger, cinnamon, coriander, yogurt, garlic, red chili powder, and turmeric. Its history is traced back to the Mughal empire when they were served to the kings. All the ingredients are mixed in the minced chicken and then the mixture is rolled into equal-sized balls. After that, these balls are steamed cooked in a spicy and flavorful gravy.

There are several ways to make a kofta curry. The majority of people prefer to use minced beef instead of chicken, however, today I have used minced chicken because these koftas are easy to cook. You will feel the koftas melting in your mouth releasing all their flavors. It is a dish that is prepared on different occasions such as family gatherings or Eid. This mouthwatering chicken kofta recipe is one of the best chicken kofta curry recipes that you can enjoy on any occasion.  You can serve them at dinner as well as lunchtime.

Ingredients for the Koftas(meatballs)

Minced chicken                           750g
Cumin seeds                                2 tbsp
Coriander seed                            2 tbsp
Cinnamon                                     1 small stick 
Chili powder                                 1 tbsp 
Gram flour                                    3 tbsp
Water                                            2 tbsp
Egg                                                1
Poppy seeds                                2 tbsp

Ingredients for curry
Onions                                           2 medium size
Cumin seeds                                2 tbs
Chili powder                                 1 tbsp
Garlic, ginger paste                     2 tbsp
Yogurt                                           6 tbsp
Turmeric                                       1 tbsp
Black cardamom                         1
Cinnamon stick                           1 medium stick
Oil                                                  As required

Method
Preparing Koftas(meatballs)
Dry roast the cumin seeds, coriander seeds, cinnamon stick, poppy seeds in a pan, and when they begin

to release smoke remove them from the pan, grind them and add this ground masala to the minced chicken. Add egg and gram flour to the mixed chicken and mix it well. Make 20 balls with this mixture. After that deep fry the meatballs on medium flame. After frying the Koftas, keep them aside.
Preparing Chicken Kofta curry
Heat the oil in a pan, add sliced onions and fry it. When the onions change the color add cumin seeds and ginger garlic paste and fry for 10 seconds. Add red chili powder, turmeric powder, cinnamon stick, black cardamom and fry it well.  Add yogurt and cover the pan on medium heat. When the water evaporates, fry the mixture for 5 minutes and then add 1 cup water. When the mixture comes to the boil add koftas and cover the pan on medium flame. Cook for 10 minutes. Garnish with green coriander and ginger and serve hot.
